What I am going to report here must have already happened to many Brazilians in recent years. To watch the Football World Cup with a digital image, I was thinking about changing my pay TV operator, as the one I subscribe to does not have this service in my city. At least that's what they said. Last week, I visited a friend and noticed that the picture on his TV was much better than mine, even though our package was the same. I asked why and he told me: “here at home it is digital, I called to complain about the image and they changed it for me”. Interesting!
The following week, I called my carrier. The dialogue Special Data went something like this:
- I'm not satisfied with the image on my LCD TV, I found out that there is a digital decoder and I want to change it.
- Sir, it doesn't exist for your city.
- But my friend does. How is it possible? Is he magical?
The attendant checked and came back after a few minutes:
- Some customers actually already have it. We can install it for you if you purchase a special (i.e. more expensive) package.
- You installed it for my friend for free, I've been your customer for 15 years, I have three points and I still have to pay more to get a decent image on the LCD TV? Send it to me to cancel and I'll sign with the competitor!
A super friendly young man answered, already instructed to provide better assistance: “Good evening sir (enthusiastically), how can I help you?” I explained the whole situation and he told me that there was a mistake, that they would release the digital signal for me and even reduce the monthly fee. Really, the words cancellation and competition open doors.
Champions League is broadcast in high definition image. Not for me!
Have you ever thought about how much we would suffer if there was no competition? Internet, cell phones and pay TV are already very expensive in Brazil, so imagine being in the hands of a single company. Fortunately, better days may come for users of these services.
A few weeks ago, the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) allowed cell phone operators to enter the pay TV market. Months earlier, the Federal Government launched the National Broadband Plan, which aims to increase internet access and speed in Brazil. To give you an idea, in Japan there is already 1 gigabyte internet, while here the fastest is equivalent to 10% of this.
